Hello, I’m Achala—an engineer turned marketer, born and raised in Bengaluru. My fashion philosophy has always been simple: easy to wear, comfortable, and of the highest quality. After spending seven years at a digital marketing agency in Monaco, specialising in luxury marketing, the pandemic gave me a chance to travel the world as a digital nomad. During one of my wardrobe cleanses, I realised the sheer amount of clothing I owned—many with tags still on—yet I always wore the same 10-15 pieces. This epiphany led me to prioritise quality over quantity, favouring pieces that last over fast fashion that falls apart after one wear.
During my time in Monaco, I met Sravani at the International University of Monaco (IUM). Along with our friend, we were three girls sharing a house and navigating university life together—it was a complete riot. To this day, these girls are my closest friends—I'd trust them with anything, even burying a dead body! Sravani, a NIFT Mumbai graduate, was deeply affected by the wastage she witnessed at an export house. This experience ignited her passion for sustainable fashion. After her master's, she worked for a bamboo clothing company in Holland but soon realised her calling was to work with grassroots-level artisans in India. She specialises in supply chain management and operations.
How Mṛjā Collective Was Formed
During the pandemic, we worked with India Handmade Collective and took a deeper dive into the fabrics, arts, and crafts of India. We realised there was a growing appetite for slow fashion in India. One pandemic, one eye-opening article, and countless cups of kapi later, we embarked on a mission to change that. Our explorations through the vibrant lanes of Indian fashion led us to discover timeless, handmade pieces with stories that begged to be shared. And so, Mṛjā Collective was born - a platform aiming to curate India’s finest slow fashion brands.
